Heatwave crisis: Two deaths reported in Odisha, over 250 hospitalized

Bhubaneswar, April 29: Tragic news unfolds in Odisha as two individuals succumb to sunstroke, according to the State Health Department. The first reported fatality occurred in Balasore district, followed by another in Dhenkanal district.
Health officials reveal that a total of 257 cases of sunstroke or heat-related illnesses have been recorded across the state, with the highest number of cases reported in Sundargarh district (60), followed by Mayurbhanj (40) and Khordha (36). Notably, 18 patients from Khordha district are currently receiving treatment at Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar.
The scorching heatwave persists, with Odisha experiencing intense conditions for over two weeks. On Monday, Keonjhar recorded the highest maximum temperature at 43 degrees Celsius by 2:30 pm, closely followed by 42.8 degrees in Jharsuguda and 42.6 degrees in Sambalpur. Bhubaneswar registered a maximum temperature of 41.3 degrees by the same time.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts no significant change in maximum temperatures over the next three to four days, issuing red warnings for severe heatwave conditions in several districts.
