IMD warns of prolonged heat wave in Odisha, temperatures to soar

Bhubaneswar, April 27: A prolonged heat wave is expected to grip parts of the state for the next four days due to dry atmospheric conditions, according to Umashankar Dash, a scientist at IMD, Bhubaneswar.
Daytime temperatures are forecasted to rise by approximately 2 degrees Celsius in various regions, with many areas likely to reach 45 degrees Celsius during this period. This heat spell is anticipated to persist until May 2, notwithstanding occasional westerly winds in certain areas.
Dash noted that the Kalabaisakhi rains experienced in some southern parts of Odisha on Friday are unlikely to provide relief from the daytime heat. Nabarangpur received the highest rainfall of 9.1 mm on Friday afternoon, influenced by westerly winds.
Furthermore, Dash issued warnings of heat wave to severe heat wave conditions for several districts over the next 24 hours, with no significant changes expected in the weather pattern for the next four days. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions, including staying indoors during peak daytime hours.
As of today, the heat wave persists, with temperatures soaring to 34 degrees Celsius in several places by 8:30 AM. Talcher recorded the highest temperature at 36.8 degrees Celsius, followed by Baripada at 36 degrees Celsius. Keonjhar, Rourkela, and Bolangir reported temperatures of 34.8 degrees Celsius each, while Bhawanipatna, Balasore, and Boudh registered 34 degrees Celsius each.
