Nayagarh court sentences culprit to death for double murder
Bhubaneswar, April 27: In Nayagarh district, a court handed down a death sentence to an individual for the murder of two individuals, including an elderly woman, in the Odagaon area of the district back in 2019.
The culprit, identified as Niranjan Mallik from Kushadhipa village in Nayagarh district, had a history of substance abuse, including alcohol, and was known for engaging in violent behavior towards women in his village and neighboring areas, according to an official.
"On January 17, 2019, Niranjan killed Lochan Sethi, a night watchman on duty at the Odagaon vegetable market, and a 70-year-old woman named Badani Pradhan inside her home. Three other individuals, including Pradhan's daughter, suffered severe injuries in the assault," stated Indubhushan Mishra, Additional Public Prosecutor for Odagaon.
Mishra added that after reviewing statements from 27 witnesses and other evidence, the court found Niranjan guilty and pronounced the death sentence. Additionally, the court ordered Niranjan to pay a fine of Rs 50,000.
Furthermore, the court instructed officials from the Nayagarh District Legal Services Authority to provide financial compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of each deceased individual.
