Nayagarh court awards death penalty in brutal double murder case

Bhubaneswar, April 26: In a historic ruling, the Nayagarh Additional District Sessions Court handed down the death penalty to a murder convict responsible for the gruesome killings of two individuals in Nayagarh district five years ago.
This landmark decision marks the first instance in Nayagarh's legal history where a murder convict has been sentenced to death. Identified as Niranjan Mallik, a resident of Kushdhipi village under Odgaon police station, the convict perpetrated the heinous crimes on January 17, 2019.
According to sources, Niranjan ruthlessly attacked security guard Lochan Sethi, who was stationed at Odgaon Market, wielding a wooden stick that resulted in fatal injuries. Subsequently, he forcibly entered the residence of Badni Pradhan, located near Odgaon cinema hall, and mercilessly murdered her.
The verdict was rendered following a meticulous examination of 27 witnesses' testimonies and a thorough review of the police investigation report by the court.
This significant judgment not only serves justice to the victims and their families but also sets a precedent for the rigorous enforcement of law and order in Nayagarh district.
