AI technology bolsters firefighting efforts in Odisha's Similipal Tiger Reserve

Baripada, April 25: In Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, the Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) authorities have implemented tower-based artificial intelligence (AI) technology to swiftly detect and respond to forest fires.
The utilization of AI technology allows for immediate monitoring and tracking of forest fires within the Shimilipal area. Thanks to this advanced system and the efforts of Green Fighters and ODRF personnel, forest fires have been contained primarily to the buffer zone of the Similipal Tiger Reserve, safeguarding the wildlife in the core region.
Five tower-based AI systems have been strategically installed throughout the Similipal sanctuary. These towers are equipped with high-resolution cameras capable of 360-degree movement, enabling them to detect activities within a radius of up to 15 km. This enhanced surveillance makes it easier to identify forest fires and instances of illegal wildlife hunting. Each AI tower installation carries an approximate cost of Rs 2.5 crore.
Furthermore, the system provides real-time data on forest fires and facilitates prompt transmission of information. To address manpower shortages, the RCCF has deployed 505 fire squads across various wildlife divisions in Mayurbhanj district. Additionally, 733 air blower machines are employed in firefighting endeavors.
