Tragic boat capsize in Mahanadi river: President mourns loss of lives

Bhubaneswar, April 20: President Droupadi Murmu of India expressed her sorrow on Saturday following the tragic loss of eight lives in a boat capsize incident along the Mahanadi River near Jharsuguda. Taking to her official handle, she conveyed her condolences to the affected families and wished for the swift recovery of those impacted by the unfortunate event.
“Distressed to learn that the capsize of a boat in Mahanadi River near Jharsuguda, Orissa led to loss of many lives. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for speedy recovery of all those affected by the tragedy” read the tweet of the President.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when a boat, carrying over 50 passengers, including women and children, overturned in the Mahanadi River in Lakhanpur, Jharsuguda district. Among the casualties were five women and three minor boys.
Originating from the Kharsani region of neighboring Chhattisgarh, the passengers were en route to Patharseni in the Ambabhona block of Bargarh district when the tragedy struck. The boat capsized near Sharda in the Lakhanpur block of Jharsuguda around 3 pm on Friday.
