IMD issues heatwave alert for Odisha spanning four days from Wednesday

Bhubaneswar, April 2: Odisha braces for soaring temperatures as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues a heatwave warning effective from Wednesday onwards. The weather agency forecasts a notable increase in daytime temperatures by 2-3°C over the next 48 hours, accompanied by warmer nights across the state.
Anticipating the onset of scorching heat, the mercury is expected to surge up to 40°C in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack by April 2, with projections soaring to 41-42°C in subsequent days. Regions like Boudh, Titlagarh, and Balangir are poised to become veritable hotspots, with temperatures potentially peaking at 43°C.
Attributing these conditions to prevailing northwesterly/westerly dry air masses and intense solar radiation, the IMD foresees daytime temperatures persisting above 40°C in many parts of Odisha, marking a deviation of 3°C to 5°C from the seasonal average between April 3-6. The public is advised to exercise caution, especially during peak daytime hours from 11 am to 3 pm.
This forecast coincides with the IMD's prediction of a harsher summer in Odisha this year, with a notable surge in heatwave occurrences anticipated during the April-May-June period. Odisha is identified among the eight states in India likely to bear the brunt of extreme heatwave conditions.
