Odisha consumer forum orders Samsung to compensate consumer for faulty TV

Bhubaneswar : A consumer disputes redressal forum in Odisha has ruled that multinational corporation Samsung must compensate a consumer with Rs 68,000 for selling a defective television set, along with additional compensation for harassment.
The case was brought before the district consumer disputes redressal forum in Malkangiri by Ram Prasad Patnaik, a lawyer, who had purchased a 43-inch TV from a Samsung showroom in March 2019. After the TV malfunctioned within 5-6 months of purchase, Patnaik returned it to the showroom for repairs.
Although the TV was under warranty for five years, and the dealer initially repaired it at no cost, the issue recurred after just 15 days. Despite Patnaik's subsequent visits to the showroom, the TV remained unrepaired and was not returned to him. Frustrated by the ordeal, he decided to file a case with the consumer court.
After hearing arguments from both the petitioner and Samsung's legal representative, the president of the consumer forum, PK Panda, and member Salam Bano, ruled in favor of Patnaik. They directed Samsung to pay Rs 68,700 to Patnaik, which includes Rs 50,700 as the cost of the TV, Rs 15,000 as compensation for the inconvenience caused, and an additional Rs 3,000 as a penalty. The payment is to be made by March 30.
