Bhubaneswar, March 23: An undertrial prisoner passed away while receiving medical care at SCB Medical College and Hospital on Friday night.

The deceased has been identified as 23-year-old Ajay Das. Reports suggest that Das, who was serving time at Keonjhar jail following a conviction in a rape case, attempted suicide by hanging himself on the jail premises the day before.

However, authorities are still investigating the factors that led Ajay to take such drastic action.

According to Keonjhar Jail Superintendent Kuanar Marandi, Ajay had a conversation with one of his family members over the phone before proceeding to the toilet, where he attempted to end his life by hanging himself on Friday. He was promptly rescued and initially taken to Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital. Due to the severity of his condition, he was subsequently transferred to SCB Medical College and Hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

Keonjhar Town police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
