Odisha jail staff suspended over Jharapada prison brawl

Bhubaneswar, March 22: Two Jharpada Jail staff members in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, have been suspended by the authorities following a group clash within the jail premises on March 17.
Warden Prabhat Kumar Maharana and Chief Warden Manguli Sethi of Jharpada Special Jail faced suspension over allegations of neglecting their duties.
According to reports, three inmates - Charaka Chakara Barik, Papu, and Jaga - assaulted fellow inmate Shambhunath Barik on the night of March 17, stemming from a dispute over alleged illicit drug trading within the prison. Shambunath Barik sustained injuries and was admitted to Capital Hospital in the city.
Warden Prabhat, who was responsible for overseeing the high-security cell that night, was suspended for purportedly showing favoritism towards Chakara Barik. CCTV footage of the incident indicated that Prabhat had released Chakara without adequately monitoring his activities within the jail.
Chief Warden Manguli Sethi, who was also on duty that night, faced suspension for failing to address the alleged drug trade issue within the jail.
