Heavy penalties await signal jumpers as Bhubaneswar traffic police tighten grip

Bhubaneswar, March 19: In preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the state, Bhubaneswar Traffic Police have heightened their crackdown on traffic violators, particularly those disregarding traffic signals.
Effective immediately, stringent penalties await drivers caught jumping traffic signals. Offenders risk a three-month suspension of their driving licenses and will be summoned to court.
Addressing the media, Bhubaneswar Traffic DCP PK Rout announced the initiation of the first phase of the crackdown across various city locations, including AG Square, Jaydev Vihar Square, Laxmisagar Square, and Khandagiri Square. The primary focus of the traffic police is on apprehending individuals disobeying red lights.
DCP Rout outlined the enforcement measures, which include vehicle seizure, driver license suspension, and legal proceedings. Furthermore, the driving licenses of violators will be submitted to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) with recommendations for a three-month suspension in accordance with the law.
It's worth noting that Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Commissionerate Police have been actively conducting awareness campaigns on traffic regulations and penalizing offenders. Between 2020 and 2023, they amassed Rs 186.04 crore in fines from traffic rule violators.
