Diarrhoea outbreak claims fifth life in Rourkela
Rourkela, Dec 17: The situation in diarrhoea-stricken Rourkela persisted as another patient succumbed to the illness today, bringing the death toll to five within a span of just three days.
The latest victim, 50-year-old Pranab Kishore Swain, a hotel owner residing in the Rourkela Railway Station area, passed away while receiving treatment at the Hi-Tech Medical College and Hospital in Rourkela.
Tragedy unfolded on Friday and Saturday as four individuals, including two elderly women and one woman, lost their lives to diarrhoea. The deceased were Glassan Samant (38) from Panposh, Nansi Dubey (75) from Udit Nagar, Phulatoli Goud (23) from Panposh, and Ahalya Nayak (70) from Orampada.
Over the past six days, Rourkela Govt Hospital admitted 167 diarrhoea patients, with 61 discharged after recovery. Meanwhile, more than 150 patients are currently undergoing treatment for diarrhoea in various city hospitals, with expectations of an increase in the coming days.
In response to the crisis, the Odisha Government dispatched a team of experts to Rourkela. The two-member team will assess the situation, collaborate with doctors and health officials involved in treatment, and investigate the cause behind the diarrhoea outbreak in Odisha's Steel City.
