5-member team at VIMSAR treats infant saved from deep borewell

Sambalpur, Dec 13: A team of five doctors has been assembled at VIMSAR, Burla, to attend to the newborn baby girl recently saved from a 20-foot-deep abandoned borewell in Odisha's Sambalpur district.
The infant, initially treated by a 10-member medical team upon arrival at the hospital around midnight, is a preterm baby weighing approximately 1.6 kg and is currently in a state of shock from the fall. Medical Superintendent Lal Mohan Nayak explained that a proper assessment of the baby's condition will be conducted once she stabilizes and recovers from shock.
The ongoing treatment is being supervised by a 5-member team led by Prof Subhas Chandra Majhi, which includes specialists in neurosurgery, pediatrics, and orthopedics. The newborn, who is receiving IV fluids, has shown some improvement since admission. Nayak mentioned that she will be closely monitored for the next 72 hours.
The rescue operation, described as complex and remarkable, involved personnel from Odisha's disaster response force successfully extracting the two-day-old baby from the borewell located in a forest near Laripali village in Rengali block. The operation, lasting eight hours, included measures such as providing oxygen and illuminating a filament bulb to maintain the infant's warmth during the rescue.
