Deep depression likely to intensify, cyclone formation anticipated

Bhubaneswar, Nov 16: The deep depression in the Westcentral Bay of Bengal is expected to develop into a cyclonic storm by Friday morning, as conveyed by Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre scientist Uma Shankar Das on Thursday.
Despite the potential cyclone formation, Das assured that Odisha is likely to remain unaffected. The system has initiated a recurve, reducing its impact on the state. While cloudy weather is anticipated due to the prevailing deep depression, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur may witness intense heavy rainfall today. Additionally, rainfall is expected in neighboring districts, according to Das.
“The Depression over Westcentral Bay of Bengal moved north-northeastwards with a speed of 18 kmph during past 6 hours, intensified into a Deep Depression and lay centred at 0530 hours IST of today, the 16th November over Westcentral Bay of Bengal near latitude 16.9°N and longitude 86.8°E, about 380 km east-southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 380 km south of Paradip (Odisha), 530 km south-southwest of Digha (West Bengal) and 670 km southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh). It is likely to continue to move north-northeastwards, intensify further and cross Bangladesh coast between Mongla and Khepupara with wind speed 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph around morning of 18th November 2023,” the MeT office said in a special bulletin.
Light to moderate rainfall may occur at a few places in Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, at one or two places in Cuttack, Jajpur, Balasore, Puri, Khurda and Mayurbhanj districts on November 16.
The intensity of rainfall is likely increase becoming light to moderate rainfall at many places with isolated heavy rainfall in coastal districts of Odisha on November 17.
