Ganjam, Gajapati and Kandhamal among worst-affected districts; rescue and evacuation operations underway
Bhubaneswar, Oct 31: Patrapur block in Ganjam district has recorded an unprecedented spell of rainfall, breaking all previous rainfall records for the area following the impact of Cyclone Arnab. Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Rajesh Prabhakar Patil shared the information while briefing mediapersons on Saturday.
According to the SRC, Ganjam, Gajapati and Kandhamal have emerged as the worst-affected districts due to incessant rainfall triggered by the cyclone. He described the rainfall recorded at Patrapur as the fourth-highest single-day downpour in Odisha's recorded weather history.
He further highlighted some of the state's major rainfall records. Thuamul Rampur in Kalahandi district continues to hold the all-time record, having received 825 mm of rainfall in a single day in 1991. Similarly, Karlamunda recorded 608 mm and Balangir received 555 mm during the exceptionally heavy rainfall in 2019.
The intense and concentrated rainfall has triggered severe flooding, widespread waterlogging and raised concerns over possible landslides in several southern districts.
Meanwhile, ODRAF and Fire Services personnel remain deployed in Ganjam, carrying out rescue, relief and evacuation operations. Teams are also closely monitoring overflowing rivers, submerged roads and vulnerable areas to prevent further casualties and ensure public safety.
