Bay of Bengal system likely to intensify into cyclonic storm; Odisha braces for heavy rain
Bhubaneswar, Oct 31: A well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Andaman Sea is likely to intensify into a depression within the next six hours and further develop into a cyclonic storm within the subsequent 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.
The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and reach the west-central Bay of Bengal near the Andhra Pradesh coast by the evening of November 2, according to the IMD's latest bulletin.
Odisha is likely to experience rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over the next few days. The IMD has issued orange warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati and Ganjam on November 3 and 4. These districts may also witness strong winds reaching 50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph.
Heavy rainfall is also likely in Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh during the period. A yellow warning has been issued for several districts on November 2, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds expected.
Meanwhile, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha coast from November 2 to 4 due to rough sea conditions and strong winds. The IMD has urged people to remain alert and follow official weather advisories as the system develops.
