Over 100 Indians Missing After Devastating Nepal Flash Floods

Kathmandu, August 26, 2026: A massive flash flood in Nepal’s Rasuwa district near the Tibet border has triggered a major humanitarian emergency, with 105 Indian nationals among 384 travellers reported missing, according to preliminary information released by the Nepal Tourism Board. Authorities stressed that the figures are still being verified as rescue teams continue their search.

The disaster struck the Bhote Koshi River area on Wednesday, sending a sudden surge of water, mud and debris through settlements and infrastructure. Rasuwa was among the worst-affected districts, while neighbouring areas including Dhading and Nuwakot also reported extensive damage. Several roads and bridges were swept away, severely hampering access to affected communities.

According to the preliminary list, 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali nationals are among those whose whereabouts are being verified. Besides the 105 Indians, the list includes travellers from countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Australia, the Netherlands and South Africa. Thirty-seven non-resident Indians (NRIs) are also included in the missing-traveller figures.

Many of the Indian travellers were reportedly on their way toward the Kailash Manasarovar pilgrimage route, making the incident particularly concerning for families in India awaiting information about their relatives. Indian authorities and the Embassy of India in Kathmandu have been coordinating with Nepalese authorities regarding rescue and relief efforts.

The flooding has also caused serious damage to Nepal’s infrastructure. Roads, bridges, electricity facilities and hydropower projects in the affected region have been damaged, disrupting transportation and power supplies. Rescue operations have been complicated by difficult terrain, damaged roads and continuing risks along the river system.

Nepalese security forces, including the Army, Police and Armed Police Force, have been deployed for search-and-rescue operations. Helicopters and other emergency resources are being used to reach stranded people and assess the scale of destruction.

Authorities have warned residents and travellers to remain away from riverbanks because the flood threat could continue in parts of the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems. Officials are also working with tourism agencies, travel operators and local authorities to verify the identities and locations of those reported missing.

As rescue efforts continue, families of the missing Indian travellers are anxiously awaiting updates. Authorities have indicated that the missing-person figures may change as communication is restored and more information becomes available.
