PM Modi's Late-Night Video Calls for Respectful Public Discourse Amid Political Row

New Delhi, Aug. 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a late-night video message urging citizens to maintain dignity and respect in public life, emphasizing that abusive language and personal attacks cannot resolve differences in a democratic society. The message came in the wake of a political controversy triggered by offensive remarks allegedly made against the Prime Minister during a public protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.

In the video, the Prime Minister appealed to people across the country to adopt the path of constructive dialogue rather than hostility. He said that disagreements are a natural part of democracy, but they should always be expressed through reasoned discussion and mutual respect. According to him, abusive language only deepens divisions and weakens the spirit of democratic debate.

Addressing the issue of young participants in political protests, PM Modi said he did not support harsh punishment for those who may have made inappropriate comments. Instead, he stressed the importance of guiding and educating the younger generation so that they understand the value of responsible expression. He remarked that the nation's youth possess immense potential and should be encouraged to contribute positively to society.

The Prime Minister observed that every citizen has the right to voice opinions and participate in democratic processes. However, he noted that this freedom carries the responsibility of maintaining civility and respecting the dignity of others, regardless of political differences. He urged political parties, social organisations and citizens to promote a culture of healthy debate based on facts rather than personal attacks.

The late-night address quickly attracted widespread attention across television channels and social media platforms. Supporters of the Prime Minister praised the message, saying it reinforced the importance of civil discourse and democratic values. Many appreciated his emphasis on counselling young people instead of demanding punitive measures against them.

At the same time, opposition parties reacted critically to the video. Several leaders argued that while respectful language is important, the government should also focus on addressing issues being raised by the opposition inside and outside Parliament. Some questioned the timing of the message and said broader political concerns required equal attention.

Political analysts believe the Prime Minister's statement was intended to lower tensions amid an increasingly heated political atmosphere. They noted that his appeal for restraint sought to shift the focus from confrontation to dialogue and encourage more responsible conduct in public life.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing concern over the use of offensive language in political discourse. Experts have repeatedly stressed that democratic institutions function best when debates are conducted with courtesy, tolerance and mutual respect, even during periods of intense political disagreement.

As discussions over the controversy continue, the Prime Minister's message has sparked a broader national conversation on the need to preserve democratic values through responsible speech and constructive engagement. Whether the appeal results in a noticeable change in political rhetoric remains to be seen, but it has undoubtedly renewed attention on the importance of maintaining civility in India's public and political life.
