Puri Rath Yatra Marred by Crowd Surge; One Devotee Dies, Scores Injured
Puri, July 16: A tragic crowd surge during the world-famous Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri on Thursday claimed the life of one devotee and left around 100 others injured or requiring medical attention, casting a shadow over one of India's largest religious festivals.
The incident occurred on the Grand Road (Bada Danda), where lakhs of devotees had gathered to witness the annual chariot procession of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. According to eyewitnesses, a sudden rush of pilgrims created panic, leading to a stampede-like situation. Several devotees reportedly collapsed due to suffocation, exhaustion and the intense pressure of the crowd.
Rescue teams, police personnel, firefighters and medical staff responded immediately. Ambulances were seen making their way through the packed streets as volunteers and security personnel carried unconscious devotees to safety. The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals, where most were reported to be in stable condition after receiving treatment.
The Odisha government expressed grief over the loss of life and directed officials to ensure prompt medical assistance for the injured. Senior administrative and police officers reached the spot to supervise rescue operations and assess the situation. Authorities have also ordered an inquiry into the incident to determine the circumstances that led to the crowd surge and to identify any lapses in crowd management.
While several eyewitnesses described the incident as a stampede, state officials maintained that it was a temporary crowd surge rather than a full-fledged stampede. They said security arrangements had been deployed across the pilgrimage route and that additional measures would be implemented to improve crowd control during the remaining days of the festival.
The Jagannath Rath Yatra is among the world's largest religious processions, drawing lakhs of devotees from across India and abroad every year. The unfortunate incident has once again highlighted the challenges of managing massive crowds at major religious gatherings and underscored the need for enhanced safety planning, better emergency access and stricter crowd-control mechanisms.
Despite the tragedy, the chariot procession continued under heightened security, with authorities appealing to devotees to remain calm, follow official instructions and cooperate with security personnel to ensure a safe and peaceful conclusion to the annual festival.
