WhatsApp Introduces Usernames, Ending the Need to Share Phone Numbers

New Delhi, June 30: In a major step towards strengthening user privacy, WhatsApp has announced a new feature that will allow users to communicate through unique usernames instead of sharing their mobile phone numbers. The update is expected to transform the way people connect on the messaging platform while offering greater control over personal information.

Under the new system, users will be able to create and reserve a unique username linked to their WhatsApp account. Once the feature is available, people can search for and message others using these usernames without needing access to their phone numbers. However, mobile numbers will continue to be required for account registration, verification, and security purposes.

The feature has been designed with privacy at its core. WhatsApp has clarified that there will be no public directory of usernames, ensuring that users remain protected from unsolicited searches. In addition, users may have the option to secure their usernames with an extra verification PIN, reducing the risk of impersonation and unwanted contact.

Existing conversations and contacts will remain unaffected. People who already have a user's phone number saved will continue to communicate as before, while new contacts can connect using usernames, helping users avoid revealing their personal mobile numbers.

The rollout of the feature has begun in phases, with username reservation becoming available to eligible users through the latest version of the app. WhatsApp plans to expand the feature globally over the coming months, although availability may differ depending on region and device.

The move is expected to benefit users who frequently interact with new people, including professionals, creators, businesses, and community groups. By reducing the need to share personal phone numbers, the update aims to improve online safety, minimize spam, and provide a more secure messaging experience.

Technology experts believe the introduction of usernames brings WhatsApp in line with several other social and messaging platforms that already offer identity-based communication. As the feature reaches more users worldwide, it is expected to become one of the platform's most significant privacy-focused updates in recent years.
