India Women's Cricket Team Qualifies for LA 2028 Olympics Despite World Cup Exit
New Delhi: The Indian women's cricket team has officially secured a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, earning qualification despite an early exit from the 2026 ICC Women's T20 World Cup.
India's hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stage ended after a defeat to Australia in the final Group A match. However, the setback did not affect the team's Olympic aspirations, as qualification for the Los Angeles Games is based primarily on the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings and the approved qualification pathway rather than World Cup performance alone.
The Indian side maintained a strong position in the ICC Women's T20 International rankings through consistent performances over the qualification period. This ensured that the team remained among the top-ranked nations eligible to compete when cricket returns to the Olympic Games after more than 128 years.
Cricket will make its long-awaited Olympic comeback at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, having last featured at the 1900 Paris Olympics. The tournament will be played in the T20 format, with six men's and six women's teams participating. The qualification process combines ICC rankings with regional representation to determine the final list of participating nations.
India's qualification is being viewed as a significant achievement for women's cricket in the country. It provides the team with an opportunity to compete for an Olympic medal on one of the world's biggest sporting stages, despite the disappointment of missing out on the latter stages of the T20 World Cup.
Meanwhile, the Indian men's cricket team has not yet confirmed its place at the 2028 Olympics. The men's qualification process remains underway and will depend on the final ICC rankings and qualification criteria closer to the Games.
The inclusion of cricket in the Los Angeles Olympics is expected to boost the sport's global popularity and provide players from leading cricketing nations with a rare chance to compete for Olympic glory. For the Indian women's team, the qualification marks another milestone as they prepare to represent the country in cricket's historic return to the Olympic programme.
