Five Air Force Personnel Killed as AN-32 Transport Aircraft Crashes in Assam
Jorhat, June 13: A tragic accident involving an Indian Air Force (IAF) AN-32 transport aircraft claimed the lives of five Air Force personnel after the aircraft crashed at an air base in Assam on Saturday. The incident occurred during a routine operational sortie, sending shockwaves across the defence establishment and prompting an immediate investigation into the cause of the crash.
According to official sources, the aircraft met with the accident while approaching the runway at the Air Force Station in Jorhat. The AN-32, a twin-engine military transport aircraft widely used by the Indian Air Force for logistical operations and personnel movement, reportedly lost control during the landing phase and crashed within the air base premises.
Witnesses in the vicinity reported hearing a loud explosion shortly before thick smoke billowed into the sky. Emergency response teams, including firefighters, rescue personnel, and security staff, rushed to the site within minutes of the crash. Efforts were immediately launched to control the fire and secure the area, while medical teams were deployed to assist any possible survivors.
However, authorities later confirmed that all five personnel on board had lost their lives in the accident. The deceased included two officers and three other Air Force personnel serving in different capacities. Their deaths have been mourned across the armed forces, with tributes pouring in from military leaders and government officials.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the Air Force personnel and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families. He praised the dedication and service of the deceased air warriors, stating that the nation would always remain grateful for their commitment and sacrifice.
In an official statement, the Indian Air Force said it deeply regrets the loss of its personnel and stands firmly with the families affected by the tragedy. The force assured that all necessary support would be provided to the next of kin during this difficult period.
To determine the exact circumstances behind the accident, the IAF has ordered a Court of Inquiry. The investigation will examine all possible factors, including technical issues, operational procedures, maintenance records, weather conditions, and human factors that may have contributed to the crash.
The AN-32 aircraft has been a key component of India's military transport fleet for decades. Known for its ability to operate in challenging terrains and high-altitude regions, the aircraft has played an important role in troop deployment, disaster relief operations, and supply missions across the country. Despite undergoing modernization and upgrades over the years, the fleet has witnessed several accidents in the past, raising concerns about ageing military aviation assets.
The latest crash has once again highlighted the importance of aviation safety within the armed forces. As investigators begin their work, attention will remain focused on uncovering the reasons behind the accident and identifying measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The nation mourns the loss of five brave Air Force personnel whose service and sacrifice will be remembered with honour and gratitude.
