Bhubaneswar, June 6: A youth was detained by police after he allegedly threatened a young woman with a sharp weapon outside Derabish College under Kendrapara police station limits on Saturday, triggering concern among students and local residents.

The incident came to light after a video of the confrontation surfaced on social media and quickly went viral. The footage purportedly shows two young women standing near the entrance of the college when a youth approaches them while brandishing a machete. In the video, he is seen allegedly intimidating the women and at one point placing the weapon against the neck of one of them, creating panic among those present nearby.

The incident drew immediate attention from passers-by, local residents and eyewitnesses in the area. Concerned by the youth’s aggressive behaviour, they alerted the police and sought immediate intervention.

Acting promptly on the information, police personnel rushed to the spot and detained the accused youth shortly after the incident. He was taken into custody and brought to the police station for questioning.

Officials said an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident and determine whether there was any prior dispute between the individuals involved. Police are also examining the viral video and collecting statements from witnesses.

The incident has raised concerns over safety around educational institutions, prompting calls for increased vigilance and security measures in and around college campuses. Further investigation is underway.
