DK Shivakumar Sworn In as Karnataka Chief Minister; G Parameshwara Takes Charge as Deputy CM
Bengaluru, June 3: Karnataka entered a new political chapter on Wednesday as senior Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar was sworn in as the Chief Minister of the state. The oath-taking ceremony, held in Bengaluru, marked the official transfer of leadership within the ruling Congress government and drew the presence of senior party leaders, elected representatives, and supporters from across the state.
Shivakumar assumed office following the resignation of outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who completed his tenure under the Congress leadership arrangement. The Congress Legislature Party had unanimously elected Shivakumar as its new leader, paving the way for his elevation to the state's highest executive office.
Alongside the new Chief Minister, veteran Congress leader G. Parameshwara took oath as the Deputy Chief Minister. His appointment is being viewed as an important move by the party leadership to maintain social and regional representation within the government while ensuring stability and unity among different sections of the Congress.
The swearing-in ceremony was conducted with simplicity despite widespread enthusiasm among party workers. State authorities and Congress leaders opted for a relatively restrained event to avoid major traffic disruptions and ensure smooth public movement in Bengaluru. Nevertheless, thousands of supporters gathered near the venue to celebrate Shivakumar's long-awaited rise to the top post.
Several cabinet ministers were also sworn in during the first phase of government formation. The Congress leadership is expected to announce portfolio allocations in the coming days after consultations with senior party leaders. Political observers believe the composition of the cabinet will play a crucial role in balancing regional aspirations and strengthening the government's administrative effectiveness.
The event also highlighted the Congress party's efforts to project internal unity. Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah shared the stage with Shivakumar and other senior leaders, sending a message of cohesion and continuity. Party leaders emphasized that the transition was smooth and carried out in accordance with the collective decision of the Congress Legislature Party.
In his first address after taking the oath, Chief Minister Shivakumar expressed gratitude to the party leadership, legislators, and people of Karnataka for placing their trust in him. He pledged to continue key welfare initiatives while focusing on economic growth, infrastructure expansion, employment generation, and investment promotion. He also promised an administration that would prioritize inclusive development and responsive governance.
Shivakumar, known for his strong organizational abilities and grassroots political network, now faces the challenge of steering one of India's most economically significant states. Expectations remain high regarding the implementation of development projects, welfare schemes, and administrative reforms under his leadership.
Political analysts believe the leadership transition could significantly influence Karnataka's political landscape in the years ahead. The Congress hopes the new administration will strengthen its governance record and consolidate public support before future electoral contests.
As the new government begins its tenure, attention will now turn to cabinet portfolio distribution, policy priorities, and the roadmap that Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar intends to follow for Karnataka's development. With a new leadership team in place, the state looks ahead to a fresh phase of governance under the Congress-led administration.
