Similipal welcomes four tiger cubs as tigress Zeenat gives birth
Bhubaneswar, June 2: In a significant milestone for wildlife conservation in Odisha, tigress Zeenat has given birth to four healthy cubs in the Similipal Tiger Reserve, bringing cheer to forest officials, conservationists, and wildlife enthusiasts across the state.
According to forest department sources, Zeenat delivered the cubs on May 28, marking a major success for ongoing tiger conservation and population enhancement efforts in the reserve. The birth of the cubs is being viewed as a positive development for the long-term sustainability of the tiger population in Similipal, one of India’s most important tiger habitats.
Forest officials said the tigress and her newborn cubs are being closely monitored to ensure their safety and well-being. Special protection measures have been put in place in and around the area where the tigress is currently sheltering with her litter. Surveillance teams are also keeping a close watch to prevent any disturbance from human activity or other potential threats.
Zeenat was translocated to Similipal from Maharashtra’s Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in November 2024 as part of efforts to strengthen the genetic diversity and tiger population in the reserve. Since her relocation, the Forest Department has been continuously tracking her movements and health through scientific monitoring methods.
The successful birth of four cubs is being hailed as a major achievement for the tiger augmentation programme in Similipal. Wildlife experts believe the development will further strengthen conservation initiatives and contribute significantly to the growth of the reserve’s tiger population in the coming years.
The arrival of the cubs has infused fresh optimism into Odisha’s wildlife conservation landscape and reaffirmed Similipal’s importance as a thriving habitat for big cats.
