Man arrested for allegedly killing wife over extramarital affair in Cuttack
Bhubaneswar, June 1: In a shocking case of alleged domestic violence, Cuttack district police have arrested a man for reportedly murdering his 28-year-old wife following repeated disputes over an extramarital relationship. The accused allegedly strangled his wife to death before attempting to conceal the crime by burying her body near a riverbank.
The accused has been identified as Malay Kumar Samal, a resident of Bhatimunda village under Tangi police station limits in Cuttack district.
According to police, Malay, a mason by profession, met Banita Sethi while working in the Balikuda area of Jagatsinghpur district a few years ago. Their friendship gradually developed into a romantic relationship, and the couple later married at a local temple. They reportedly lived together in Jagatsinghpur for nearly two years.
Police said Malay later brought Banita to Cuttack and arranged for them to stay in a rented house under Tangi police station limits. Banita was employed at a private agency and contributed to the family's income.
Investigators revealed that the couple’s relationship became strained after a distant female friend of Banita came to stay with them. During her stay, Malay allegedly developed an extramarital relationship with the woman, leading to frequent arguments between the husband and wife.
Police suspect the ongoing disputes culminated in the crime. Malay allegedly strangled Banita to death on Wednesday, stuffed her body into a gunny bag, and buried it near the Mendhakhai River.
Following a complaint filed by Banita’s family, police detained Malay for questioning. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to the murder. Further investigation is underway.
