Notorious criminal injured in police encounter in Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar, May 27: In a major breakthrough against organised crime and drug trafficking, the Special Crime Unit (SCU) of Bhubaneswar Police injured a notorious criminal and alleged drug peddler, identified as Pupun Majhi, during an encounter in the Info Valley area on Wednesday.
According to police sources, a team of the Special Crime Unit intercepted Majhi during a raid conducted on the basis of specific intelligence inputs. During the operation, Majhi allegedly opened fire at the police team while trying to escape from the spot.
In retaliation, the police personnel fired back, injuring the accused. He was subsequently overpowered and immediately shifted to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar for treatment. As his condition was stated to be critical, doctors later referred him to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced medical care.
Police officials said that during the operation, they recovered 25 grams of brown sugar, a pistol, five live rounds of ammunition, and a motorcycle from Majhi’s possession.
Pupun Majhi, a native of Buguda in Ganjam district, is reportedly involved in more than 20 criminal cases registered in his home district. Police have also identified several criminal cases pending against him in Bhubaneswar.
The Special Crime Unit had been tracking his activities for alleged involvement in drug trafficking and other serious offences in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Further investigation into the case is currently underway.
