Heatwave continues to scorch Odisha; Sambalpur sizzles at 41.2°C
Bhubaneswar, May 27: Intense heatwave conditions continued to grip several parts of Odisha on Wednesday, with Sambalpur emerging as the hottest place in the state as temperatures soared above 41 degrees Celsius.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) report recorded at 11:30 am, Sambalpur registered a scorching 41.2°C, making it the hottest city in Odisha for the day. Hirakud followed closely with 39°C, while Jharsuguda recorded 38.4°C. The state capital Bhubaneswar experienced a temperature of 37°C, and Chandbali recorded 36.2°C.
Apart from the soaring temperatures, high humidity levels have significantly increased discomfort among residents across the state. The combined effect of heat and humidity has made outdoor conditions extremely oppressive, particularly during afternoon hours.
The prevailing weather conditions have affected normal life in many areas, with fewer people venturing outdoors during peak daytime hours. Authorities are also keeping a close watch on the situation amid concerns over heat-related illnesses.
The India Meteorological Department has advised people to take adequate precautions to protect themselves from the extreme heat. Citizens have been urged to avoid direct exposure to the sun between 11 am and 3 pm, drink plenty of water, remain hydrated, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
The weather office has also cautioned vulnerable groups, including children, elderly persons, and outdoor workers, to remain especially careful during the ongoing heatwave conditions.
