IMD predicts low-pressure formation over Bay of Bengal, relief likely for Odisha
Bhubaneswar, May 22: Amid the ongoing spell of intense heat and humid weather across Odisha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the possible formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, bringing hopes of relief for residents struggling with the harsh summer conditions.
According to the latest forecast issued by the IMD, there is a 91 to 97 per cent probability of cyclogenesis over the North Indian Ocean during the next two weeks. Meteorologists said a low-pressure area is likely to form over the central Bay of Bengal around May 28 and 29.
Weather experts stated that favourable atmospheric conditions, including the active Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) phase and other supportive weather systems, are creating conditions suitable for the development of the system.
Once formed, the low-pressure area is expected to move in a north-westward direction, which could trigger widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds across several districts of Odisha.
The anticipated weather activity is likely to provide significant respite from the prevailing heatwave by increasing cloud cover, lowering daytime temperatures and reducing humidity levels. Authorities are closely monitoring the evolving weather situation and further updates are expected in the coming days.
