Coastal Odisha prepares for rainfall as Bay of Bengal depression looms

Bhubaneswar, Oct 22: A weather system in the west-central Bay of Bengal is showing signs of intensification, with a likely transition into a deep depression within the next 24 hours. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this system has remained nearly stationary over the same area for the past three hours.
As of the latest update from IMD, the depression is currently positioned approximately 610 kilometers south of Paradip (Odisha), 760 kilometers south of Digha (West Bengal), and 980 kilometers south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh).
Over the next 12 hours, it is expected to move northwestwards before changing course to a north-northeastward trajectory over the following three days, heading towards the coasts of Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal.
Uma Shankar Das, a scientist from the IMD Regional Centre in Bhubaneswar, noted that the low-pressure system is in the process of intensifying into a deep depression and is likely to further escalate into a cyclonic storm.
As of now, there are no warnings issued for Odisha, but increased wind speeds may lead to rough sea conditions. Consequently, fishermen from Odisha are strongly advised to return to shore promptly. Additionally, several parts of the coastal Odisha region are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall.
