Odisha to decide on district-wise summer vacation amid rising heat
Bhubaneswar, April 16: Amid soaring temperatures across the state, the Odisha government will decide on declaring summer vacation in schools on a district-wise basis after receiving detailed reports from District Collectors, School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond said on Thursday.
The minister emphasised that the safety and well-being of students remain the government’s top priority as heatwave conditions intensify, particularly in parts of western Odisha. He said the situation is being closely monitored, and no blanket decision will be taken without proper ground-level assessment.
“The decision on school closures will be taken only after receiving inputs from the respective district collectors,” Gond stated, adding that authorities have been asked to submit comprehensive reports on local weather conditions and their impact on students.
Meanwhile, the Special Relief Commissioner is scheduled to hold a review meeting to assess the prevailing heatwave situation. A final call on advancing summer vacation or temporarily closing schools will be taken after this बैठक and detailed evaluation.
According to the India Meteorological Department, temperatures touched 40°C or above at multiple locations, with Titilagarh recording a high of 42°C on Thursday, underscoring the severity of the heatwave.
