Unit-1 vegetable vendors postpone strike after assurances

Bhubaneswar, Oct 19: The planned strike by vegetable vendors in Bhubaneswar's Unit-1, scheduled to commence on October 20, has been postponed following assurances received during a meeting chaired by Bhubaneswar's Central MLA.
Previously, the vegetable vendors at Unit-1 Haat had decided to go on strike if their demands were not addressed. They had presented a seven-point set of demands to the state government.
The strike had raised concerns about a potential shortage of raw vegetables, not only in the capital city but across the entire state of Odisha, as the transportation of vegetables from Maharashtra, Bengal, West Bengal, and Telangana would be disrupted.
The Vegetables Traders Association had voiced their grievances, highlighting issues like road blockages near SBI caused by the Unit 1 Durga Puja Committee and the removal of a plastic market by the roadside. Additionally, they had requested the allocation of 10 acres of land in Bhagbanpur.
The primary demands of the association included the construction of a two-story market building in Unit No. 2, the provision of accommodations for all traders from AG to Rajmahal in Unit 1 Haat, and the discontinuation of temporary plastic markets, winter clothes bazaars, and the sale of idols during various festivals.
The strike's potential repercussions were expected to impact not only Bhubaneswar but also neighboring regions, including Puri, Brahmagiri, Nimapada, Astarang, Kakatpur, Khordha, and Jatni.
