48-hour shutdown paralyzes Rairangpur over arrest of villagers
Bhubaneswar, Mar 20: The Adivasi Ekta Manch has enforced a 48-hour shutdown in the Rairangpur sub-division of Mayurbhanj district, protesting the arrest of villagers following a recent clash with police. The shutdown has brought normal life to a halt, with offices, markets, shops, and educational institutions remaining closed, while vehicles stayed off the roads.
The unrest stems from a violent incident in Binjhua village under Tiring police limits in Bahalda block. According to reports, tensions flared after a minority youth allegedly attempted to molest a tribal minor girl. The incident triggered outrage among locals, leading to a confrontation between villagers and police that escalated into a violent clash. At least 13 police personnel were reportedly injured during the incident.
Police subsequently arrested 34 villagers and produced them in court, prompting strong opposition from the Adivasi Ekta Manch. The group initially staged a two-day dharna in front of the Bamanghati Sub-Divisional Officer’s office, demanding the unconditional release of those detained.
After authorities failed to act, the organisation issued an ultimatum and launched the shutdown from March 20 to March 22, intensifying its protest for the release of both men and women arrested in the case.
