147 killed in Odisha cyclones over 12 years; losses cross ₹19,500 crore
Bhubaneswar, Feb 19: As many as 147 people lost their lives in cyclones that struck Odisha over the past 12 years, Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari informed the State Assembly on Thursday.
In a written reply to a question raised by Congress MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati, the Minister said the state faced 12 cyclones between 2014 and 2025. Out of these, four severe cyclonic storms accounted for all 147 fatalities. The cumulative loss to property and infrastructure during this period was estimated at ₹19,529 crore.
The deadliest among these disasters was Cyclone Titli in 2018, which claimed 73 lives. Cyclone Fani in 2019 followed with 68 fatalities. Three deaths each were reported during Cyclone Hudhud (2014) and Cyclone Yaas (2021).
Detailing the economic damage, Pujari said Cyclone Fani caused the highest destruction, with losses pegged at ₹9,336.27 crore. Hudhud led to damages worth ₹4,949.39 crore, while Titli caused losses of ₹2,779.32 crore.
The cyclones also devastated livelihoods. Over 54.21 lakh livestock perished, more than 8.40 lakh houses were damaged, and nearly 17 lakh hectares of agricultural land were affected, underscoring Odisha’s continuing vulnerability to severe cyclonic storms.
