Two labourers killed, one injured in boulder collapse during illegal quarrying in Malkangiri
Bhubaneswar, Jan 16: At least two labourers lost their lives and another sustained injuries after a massive boulder dislodged during illegal quarrying near the Bhairabi Temple at Pathar Kuanari in Malkangiri district on Friday. The deceased have been identified as Mitu Madhi of Champaghari village and Tuna Gadaba of Gadaba village.
The injured worker, Bijay Rao, also from Champaghari, is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. Doctors have stated that his condition is stable.
According to reports, six labourers were engaged in unauthorized stone quarrying activities on a hill near the temple around 8 am when a huge rock suddenly broke loose and crashed down on them. One worker died on the spot, while two others were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Sadly, one of the injured labourers later succumbed to his injuries, raising the death toll to two.
Following the tragic incident, tension prevailed in the area as local residents protested against the ongoing illegal quarrying, alleging it has endangered lives for a long time.
Police reached the spot and launched an investigation. District Labour Officer Arnapurna Duruka said a case will be registered under the Employee Compensation Act and action will be taken against the quarry owner after inquiry.
