Cold wave tightens grip on Odisha, 24 places record temperatures below10°C
Bhubaneswar, Jan 8: A severe cold wave has engulfed Odisha, with as many as 24 locations recording minimum temperatures below 10°C on Wednesday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). G Udayagiri in Kandhamal district emerged as the coldest place in the state, recording a chilling 2.5°C. It was followed by Semiliguda at 3.2°C and Phulbani at 5°C.
Significantly, Bhubaneswar witnessed a minimum temperature of 9.4°C, equalling a 74-year-old record low for January 8, making it one of the coldest mornings in the capital’s history. Other regions also experienced biting cold, with Rourkela recording 5.4°C, Jharsuguda 5.8°C and Daringbadi 6°C.
Bhawanipatna and Nabarangapur reported temperatures of 7°C each, while Kirei recorded 7.2°C and Chiplima 7.5°C. Angul remained cold at 7.8°C, and Keonjhar and Sundargarh both touched 8°C. Dhenkanal and Ranital stood at 8.9°C and 8.6°C respectively.
The IMD has predicted that the cold wave will continue, with temperatures likely to dip further by 2–4°C over the next three days. Residents have been advised to take necessary precautions to stay warm and safe.
