₹5,000 spot fine for open burning in Bhubaneswar as BMC tightens pollution control
Bhubaneswar, Jan 6: In a strong move to curb rising air pollution, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a spot fine of ₹5,000 for anyone found indulging in open burning within the city limits. The decision forms part of intensified enforcement measures under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).
The decision was taken at a recent meeting on Air Quality Management of Bhubaneswar city, held under the chairmanship of the BMC Commissioner. Following the meeting, strict directions have been issued to all Zonal Commissioners (in charge) to implement a series of pollution-control measures across their respective zones.
As part of the crackdown, Zonal Commissioners have been instructed to identify defaulters involved in open burning of waste or other materials and impose on-the-spot fines of ₹5,000 for each violation. Shops and commercial establishments violating pollution norms may also face closure. All eateries and commercial units have been directed to use clean cooking fuel to reduce emissions.
The BMC will also take strict action against hotels and roadside food outlets using coal-based or wood-fired chullahs, including sealing of such establishments. The enforcement drive will begin from the Lingaraj Temple area and gradually cover all parts of the city.
Additionally, the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) has been directed to ensure regular water sprinkling at bus depots and stands, along with daily cleaning and washing of buses. Cooking for the Mid-Day Meal Programme in schools must also strictly use clean fuel, officials said.
