Dense fog, plunging temperatures grip Odisha ahead of New Year
Bhubaneswar, Dec 30: Cold wave conditions are set to intensify across Odisha with the onset of the New Year, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow warning for January 1.
The weather agency has forecast dense fog at several places across the state, raising concerns over reduced visibility and travel disruptions. An alert has been issued for 10 districts where dense fog is likely, while temperatures in at least 15 cities have already dipped below 10 degrees Celsius.
According to IMD officials, during the next 24 hours there is a high probability of dense fog at isolated locations in Sundargarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak and Balasore districts. In addition to fog, severe cold wave conditions are expected to prevail in parts of Angul and Jharsuguda, increasing discomfort for residents.
The intensity of the cold wave was evident as G Udayagiri recorded a chilling minimum temperature of just 3.6 degrees Celsius, the lowest in the state. Dense foggy conditions have continued to persist in several areas. In Cuttack, visibility remained severely affected even around 9 am, with the city enveloped in a thick blanket of fog, making roads and surroundings appear completely white. Authorities have advised people to remain cautious, especially during early morning hours.
