Commissionerate Police bust major arms smuggling racket; two arrested with huge cache of weapons
Bhubaneswar, Dec 6: In a major success in the fight against illegal arms trade, the Special Crime Unit (SCU) of the Commissionerate Police has arrested two notorious arms smugglers and recovered a significant cache of weapons. The breakthrough came on December 5 following specific intelligence inputs, leading to the interception of a Bolero vehicle at Khandagiri Overbridge. The vehicle was reportedly transporting arms from Angul to Berhampur.
During the search, officials discovered 10 pistols, an automatic carbine, and several rounds of ammunition concealed inside a bag. The arrested accused have been identified as Sumanta Naik (30) of Angul and Soubhagya Naik (30) of Dhenkanal. Initial investigations suggest that the duo procured the sophisticated weapons from Jharkhand and Munger in Bihar—regions known for illegal arms manufacturing.
Police have seized 9MM and 7.65MM pistols, an automatic carbine, 12 rounds of 9MM ammunition, three mobile phones, and Rs 1,600 in cash. Both individuals have criminal histories, with multiple cases related to the Arms Act, robbery, and dacoity.
Police Commissioner S. Devdutta Singh stated that both accused are key links in an interstate arms supply chain. He expressed hope that their arrest would significantly disrupt the network. Further investigations are underway to identify the recipients of the arms and track the broader smuggling operations.
