College student in Rajgangpur attempts self-immolation, undergoing treatment at Rourkela IGH
Bhubaneswar, Dec 6: A shocking incident has been reported from Rajgangpur in Sundargarh district, where a college student allegedly attempted to take her own life by setting herself on fire in the early hours of Saturday. The girl, a third-year Arts student of Rajgangpur Women’s College, reportedly poured petrol over herself before igniting a matchstick, causing severe burn injuries.
Family members and neighbours, alerted by her screams, rushed to rescue her and immediately shifted her to the Ispat General Hospital (IGH) in Rourkela. Doctors at the facility are currently treating her, and her condition is being closely monitored.
Upon receiving information about the incident, Rajgangpur police reached the spot and initiated an investigation. Officials have recorded the student’s initial statement, but the exact motive behind her extreme step remains unclear. Police sources said they are examining various angles, including personal, academic, and family-related issues, to determine what may have led to the attempt.
The incident has created shock and concern in the local community, with many urging for increased awareness and support systems for students facing emotional or psychological distress.
