Statewide bus strike withdrawn after Odisha govt clarifies no extra powers for police
Bhubaneswar, Nov 27: The All Odisha Bus Owners’ Association (AOBOA) has officially withdrawn its proposed statewide bus strike, which was scheduled to begin on December 1. The association had earlier announced the strike over apprehensions that the state government was planning to grant additional motor vehicle checking powers to the police—a move they feared could lead to harassment of bus operators and unnecessary disruptions in daily operations.
According to AOBOA General Secretary Debendra Kumar Sahu, the government’s clear assurance has brought relief to transport operators across the state. He stated that the Transport Department, during discussions with the association, confirmed that no such decision had been taken to enhance police powers related to vehicle inspections. This clarification addressed the main concern that had prompted the association to call for the strike.
With the confusion resolved, AOBOA expressed gratitude to the state government for promptly addressing the issue and ensuring a smooth continuation of public transport services. The decision has come as a major relief for thousands of commuters who rely on bus services for daily travel across Odisha. The association has also reiterated its willingness to cooperate with the government on future regulatory discussions.
