Cyclonic circulation over Malacca Strait may intensify; Odisha braces for four days of heavy rain
Bhubaneswar, Nov 20: A cyclonic circulation has developed over the central Malacca Strait, extending up to 5.8 km above sea level, raising the likelihood of significant weather changes in the coming days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this system is expected to trigger the formation of a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal around November 22. The system may further intensify into a depression by November 24 as it gradually moves west-northwestwards.
Weather scientist Uma Shankar Das, in a post on X, confirmed the development and highlighted the potential trajectory of the system. He stated that the emerging low-pressure area is likely to strengthen as it moves into the southwest Bay of Bengal over the next 48 hours. This progression indicates the possibility of more intense weather activity in the region.
Under the influence of the system, Odisha is expected to witness heavy to moderate rainfall for four consecutive days. Coastal and southern districts are likely to experience the highest rainfall activity. According to forecasts, several parts of the state will receive rain until November 25, prompting authorities and residents to stay alert for potential weather-related disruptions.
