Attempted rape at Baramunda bus terminal: Accused arrested after swift police action
Bhubaneswar, Nov 4: In a shocking incident, an attempted rape was reported at the Baramunda bus terminal in Bhubaneswar on November 2, when a woman and her 10-year-old daughter were allegedly targeted by a man while waiting for a bus.
According to reports, the accused, identified as Pabitra Kanhar (39), a resident of Begunipada in Ganjam district, allegedly tried to assault the woman while she and her daughter were resting at the terminal late at night. The terrified woman managed to alert nearby passengers and sought help, following which the Bharatpur police were informed.
Acting promptly, the police rushed to the spot and apprehended the accused as he attempted to escape. He was later arrested and booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for attempted rape and other offences.
Kanhar was subsequently produced before a local court, and further investigation is underway to ascertain whether he has been involved in similar offences in the past. The incident has sparked outrage among commuters, raising fresh concerns about women’s safety at public transport hubs in the capital city.
