IMD issues yellow warning for Odisha; heavy rain and thunderstorms likely
Bhubaneswar, Oct 29: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for several districts of Odisha, forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the next two days. The weather alert comes as parts of the state continue to experience unstable atmospheric conditions following Cyclone ‘Montha’.
According to the IMD, heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places in the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Bhadrak, Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, and Nabarangapur on October 31.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong surface winds reaching 45–55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, are expected in Koraput and Malkangiri. Similarly, districts like Nabarangapur, Rayagada, Kalahandi, and Gajapati may experience wind speeds of 35–45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph.
The IMD has also predicted thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds (30–40 kmph) at one or two places over a wide range of districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Deogarh, Bargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj on October 31 and November 1.
The IMD has advised the public to take precautions against lightning, avoid shelter under trees, and stay indoors during thunderstorms. Farmers have also been cautioned to safeguard crops and livestock in anticipation of adverse weather conditions.
