IMD issues orange alert for Odisha as cyclonic storm likely by October 27
Bhubaneswar, Oct 25: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for Odisha, forecasting that a developing weather system in the Bay of Bengal could intensify into a cyclonic storm by Tuesday, October 27. The state is expected to witness increasing rainfall and strong winds over the next five days, with several districts under an Orange Alert, signaling the need to be prepared for potential impacts.
According to the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to strengthen into a depression by Saturday, a deep depression by Sunday, and finally evolve into a cyclonic storm over the southwest Bay of Bengal by Monday morning.
The five-day forecast is as follows:
• Day 1-2 (Today & Tomorrow): Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph in parts of coastal and southern Odisha (Yellow Alert).
• Day 3 (Sunday): Widespread rainfall covering coastal and interior districts continues under Yellow Alert.
• Day 4 (Monday): Rain expected at “many places” with first warnings of heavy rain for Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Ganjam, and Jagatsinghpur.
• Day 5 (Tuesday): Orange Alert issued; heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms likely in Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, and Ganjam, with rainfall at most places across the state.
The IMD warned of possible crop damage, uprooted trees, minor structural damage, waterlogging, localized flooding, and landslides in vulnerable areas. Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid travel, keep away from trees and water bodies, and take precautions with electrical appliances.
