Superstition trumps science in Odisha village as two youths declared ‘dead while alive’ after seeing mating crows

Bhubaneswar, July 31: In an age where humanity is exploring the cosmos and breaking scientific boundaries, the grip of superstition still holds sway in many corners of society. A recent incident from Patraguda village in Odisha's Koraput district has shocked many and sparked widespread debate on the persistence of blind faith.
Just 10 kilometres from the Koraput District Headquarters, two young men were bizarrely declared “dead while alive” by their community—all because they reportedly saw two crows mating. According to prevailing tribal beliefs, witnessing such an act is considered an ominous sign, supposedly foretelling one's death.
Gripped by fear, the villagers immediately began performing post-death rituals for the two youths. The young men were laid on bamboo stretchers as if lifeless, surrounded by grieving relatives who cried and chanted. Funeral-like ceremonies, including purification rites, were performed in an effort to appease fate.
In a dramatic twist, the rituals were eventually reversed, and the two were “restored to life” and taken home. The entire episode, caught on video and now viral, has ignited conversations on the urgent need to address superstition and promote rational thinking in tribal and rural regions.
