Ravenshaw University withdraws controversial ban on women staying after 5:30 PM

Bhubaneswar, July 18: Ravenshaw University in Cuttack faced backlash on Thursday after issuing a controversial directive restricting the presence of female faculty, staff, and students on campus after 5:30 PM. However, within hours of releasing the circular, the university administration withdrew the order, citing the need for a more inclusive and comprehensive safety policy.
The initial circular, issued by the Registrar's office, stated that no female employee or student would be allowed to remain on campus after 5:30 PM. The measure was introduced as a temporary step until a formal Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for campus safety could be implemented.
The directive was reportedly intended to enhance the safety and security of female students and staff and to better regulate working and study hours. However, it quickly drew criticism for being discriminatory and gender-biased.
In response to the concerns raised by students, faculty, and activists, the university retracted the circular. Officials clarified that a revised safety guideline, applicable to all students and staff regardless of gender, will be developed soon to ensure a safe and inclusive campus environment.
