IMD issues fresh heavy rain alert for Odisha as low-pressure system develops

Bhubaneswar, July 5: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a fresh alert forecasting widespread rainfall across Odisha over the next few days, triggered by a developing low-pressure system over Gangetic West Bengal and its neighbouring regions.
According to the midday bulletin from IMD’s Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, a cyclonic circulation persisting over northern parts of Gangetic West Bengal is extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level and tilting southwestward with height. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is expected to form within the next 24 hours.
A trough line extending from the northeast Arabian Sea to this system—passing through Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand—is also contributing to the increased rainfall activity.
The southwest monsoon remains active in Odisha, with light to moderate rain recorded across most places and heavy showers in Kendrapada, Bhadrak, and Kalahandi. The IMD has issued area-wise alerts for the next several days. For Day 1 (till 8:30 AM on July 6), an Orange Warning (be prepared) has been issued for Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Jharsuguda, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds (30–40 kmph).
A Yellow Warning (be aware) covers Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Deogarh, Koraput, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Bolangir, and Nuapada. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are also expected in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur.
