Gopalpur gang rape: Six accused taken on remand; Crime Branch begins scene recreation, awaits forensic report

Bhubaneswar, June 25: In a significant development in the Gopalpur gang rape case, the Odisha Crime Branch on Tuesday took six adult accused on a two-day remand for detailed interrogation. Meanwhile, four minors allegedly involved in the brutal assault remain in judicial custody, as per the directions of the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) Court in Berhampur.
The 20-year-old survivor had earlier identified the accused during a jail-based Test Identification (TI) parade. The Crime Branch is now preparing to recreate the crime scene at Gopalpur beach to establish a chronological sequence of events as part of the investigation.
The incident occurred on June 15, when the victim, a college student, visited the beach with a male friend to celebrate the Raja festival. A group of ten youths from Hinjili in Ganjam district reportedly overpowered the friend and took turns assaulting her. Several of the accused are minors.
Crime Branch DGP Vinaytosh Mishra confirmed that digital and material evidence collected from the scene has been sent to the State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL). DNA profiling has been completed, and CCTV footage and mobile phone data are being preserved and analyzed. The chargesheet will follow after the forensic report is received.
