ASHA worker brutally killed over land dispute in Ganjam, accused on the run

Bhubaneswar, June 5: In a shocking incident, an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) worker was hacked to death by her brother-in-law following a land dispute at Chadiapalli village under Jagannathprasad police limits in Odisha’s Ganjam district. The deceased has been identified as Tuni Tripathi, a dedicated frontline health worker known in the local community.
According to reports, Tuni had been involved in a prolonged land dispute with her brother-in-law’s family, which had caused tension and frequent arguments between the two sides. On Wednesday night, a heated confrontation erupted, and in a fit of rage, the accused allegedly attacked Tuni with an axe. She died on the spot due to the severity of her injuries.
The murder has sent shockwaves through the village, especially among local health workers and women’s groups. Upon being informed, Jagannathprasad police reached the location and started an investigation. The accused fled the scene immediately after committing the crime and is currently absconding.
Police have launched a manhunt to apprehend the accused. Meanwhile, Tuni’s body was sent for post-mortem, and further legal procedures are underway. The incident has raised concerns over the safety of women health workers in rural areas.
